It is often said that one of the most significant journeys we ever make is the one from our head to our heart. This is true.
Yet there is another step on our spiritual path which is equally as significant. That is the journey from the mind to the Earth. It’s a journey that takes us from being “out there” to “here now”.
When I was young, my dreams were my happy place. I’d escape the challenges of life by immersing myself in books and fantasies, and by dreaming big. When I was trapped with my siblings and parents on long car rides, I looked out the window and filled my mind with daydreams and imaginations.
It was the most perfect form of escape.
When I started my journey as a psychic, it was so easy! I was already so far out of my body on a daily basis, that to tap into Spirit and the astral realms was a natural extension of something I’d been doing for years.
The problem was that there was no balance. It was easy to be in that other world with all its spaciousness and dimensions, but much more challenging to be here in this world.
Whilst that was my gift, it was also my handicap.
This past 10 years, something has shifted in me. I’ve learned to be here, growing like the lotus flower out of a bed of mud. This has allowed me to become grounded at a level I’ve never known before. It’s changed everything for me.
Being grounded is my anchor. It allows me to be the rock in my own life, and in the life of others. It gives me resilience and strength.
But something else really interesting has happened. The more grounded and anchored I’ve become, the more my connection with Spirit has opened. In the past I received my messages as visions and feelings and occasional messages. And whilst those channels are still open for me, I’ve noticed a shift in how I receive my messages today (now that I’m much more grounded within myself).
I get this absolute and unwavering “knowing” that something is true, and that’s what I act on.
So how do you become grounded when you’re not?
The first step is having the awareness that you’re not grounded, and calling your energy into your body. You are in control of your energy, so when you call it into yourself, it is there.
This can be further enhanced using this simple yet incredibly powerful visualisation:
Sit quietly, and bring your attention to the centre of the Earth. Imagine a little seed there, which is alive and which starts to germinate.
See it throwing out a small branch with a leaf on it, then another, and then another.
Watch as this plant grows, and grows. You see it moving up through the layers of the Earth, becoming bigger and stronger. See it developing a magnificent strong trunk, and ancient roots that anchor down into the very centre of the Earth.
You see the tree breaking through the ground just underneath where you are sitting. Feel it’s amazing lifeforce and trunk penetrate the base of your spine, moving up your spine, and then see its powerful branches emerging from the top of your head.
This visualisation is one way to anchor and ground yourself.
The more present you are with this visualisation so you can see and feel every part of it, the more powerfully it works and the more rock-solid you become within yourself.
And others can feel it, too.
20 years ago I was having a tense moment with a neighbour. She was waiting for me to arrive home, and standing on my stairs wanting to have a go at me about something. I no longer remember what that something was, I just remember how uncomfortable I felt as she launched into her argument. It wasn’t what I wanted at that moment.
Recognising that I was feeling quite vulnerable, I did this visualisation while I was listening to her. This visualisation can be done at whatever speed we want – it can take 5 minutes, or 5 seconds. I did the quick version, but it still had an amazing impact.
This neighbour felt the shift in my energy as I did the visualisation, and even commented on it. She wasn’t aware of what I’d just done, but I was. As soon as I settled and grounded from the visualisation, so did she….and from there, we were able to have a much more constructive and peaceful conversation.
The other way to ground your energy is with essential oils.
I have 3 favourites, and choose one of these 3 when I’m in need:
Palo Santo oil
Palo Santo essential oil represents the sacred masculine. It is strong and grounding, and also very protective. If I’m looking to create a protective bubble around myself, I’d place it on the base of my neck at C7/T1. However, if I want to ground myself, I love to place it at the bottom of my spine, around where the button crease starts. That’s a great access point for the base chakra.
Whenever I put an essential oil onto my body, I love to rub it 3 times clockwise in order to activate it. Clockwise is how our DNA spins when we are healthy, so using our oils in a clockwise motion is a great way to affirm health through our whole body.
I’ve noticed that when I apply Palo Santo oil, it’s like creating a cord from my lower spine down into the Earth. Any emotional turbulence I’ve been feeling seeps away.
Prior to putting the oil on, I may feel like I’m in a stormy sea, being tossed around by whatever is happening in my life and by my emotional reactions. Yet after applying Palo Santo oil, it’s as though I’m standing in a bathtub, and all those emotions (water) have disappeared, and I’m just standing in a puddle. It brings me to a state where I have clarity of mind and emotions.
Cedarwood Oil
How a plant grows tells us a lot about how its oil will work on us. The oil from a big, strong tree will bring strength and resilience, whereas the oils from a delicate flower will help us connect with our softness and femininity, our connection and flow.
Cedarwood is a beautiful tall tree, and its oil carries its own wisdom of strength and grounding.
A few months ago, I ran a Sound Healing at a yoga retreat. Cedarwood was one of the oils that I passed around, inviting participants to rub a drop under each foot. After the event, the yoga instructor came up to me. He acknowledged that although he always thought of himself as being very grounded, the Cedarwood oil had carried that to a whole new level for him.
Placing an oil under our feet or on our base chakra connects us to the Earth. It’s not just the oil itself that is important, but also where it is placed.
Grounding Oil Blend
I love teaching people how to see auras, and have been doing this for over 30 years. Once I started using the Young Living essential oils, I began wondering how an essential oil would impact the aura. So in my classes, I’d show students how to see the aura. We’d have one of the students in the “hot seat” and everyone else observing that student’s aura. After confirming that everyone could see the aura, I’d then put an essential oil on the student in the hot seat.
With most of the essential oils I’d choose, the aura would suddenly shoot up in size and vitality, pulsing or flashing with colours. This isn’t surprising, because the Young Living oils carry a very powerful life force because of how they are produced.
One day, I chose Grounding oil to put on the student in the hot seat. It was fascinating. Instead of the aura shooting up in size, it shrunk closer to the body.
This made perfect sense. Grounding oil was created to achieve the effect of grounding us into our body, so of course it wouldn’t expand the aura. Instead, it pulled the energy field close to the physical body, which is exactly what we’d want to see happening.
Grounding oil can be applied under the feet (like Cedarwood), or down the sternum….or wherever else it calls you.
There’s no right or wrong with where you place an essential oil, so long as you are avoiding soft sensitive tissues (like the eyes and ear drum). Just be aware that citrus oils (like Orange, Lemon, Grapefruit, Lime and Bergamot) make the skin more sensitive to UV light, and need to be placed on skin that will be covered with clothing and not exposed to direct sunlight or UV light for at least 24 hours. The 3 oils/blends mentioned above are not photosensitising.
