The Tuning Fork

A couple of weeks ago, I found myself in a tough situation. I was in Singapore airport, and had just boarded my flight to Sri Lanka when the crew announced that we had technical issues.

We were about to spend 2 hours on the tarmac waiting for those issues to be resolved, prior to our 4 hour flight. I was feeling strung out. It had been a long day to get this far, and the seats had very little legroom for my graceful, tall body.

But my discomfort was the least of my problems. Sitting next to me was my friend. This was her third flight, and she wasn’t doing well at all. Some digestive issues had started triggering, and she was fighting waves of nausea and panic.

“What do you need?” I asked her. I could see that she was hanging on by her fingernails.

She didn’t answer me because she couldn’t. She was in a deep internal process, fighting that impulse to explode physically or emotionally.

I reached out to Spirit for guidance. Was there an essential oil she'd benefit from, to help calm her? Would some energy healing help to balance her?

The answer I received back was neither of those things.

The message was very simple. It was to “be Joy”. I have been in such a happy and joy-filled space recently. Spirit was inviting me to step intentionally into that powerful energy of Joy and Light, and allow my frequency to act like a tuning fork.

By anchoring into that energy myself, I would naturally emit that frequency. It’s a frequency that my friend could then feel and anchor to, which would call her towards that frequency within herself.

This process of one object calling another object into frequency alignment is called “Resonance”.

Tuning forks are a great example of this.

A tuning fork is a metal stick with 2 prongs on it (called “tines”). When one of the tines is struck against a hard surface like a knee or hand or piece of rubber, the tuning fork begins to vibrate at a specific pure frequency. That frequency is pre-determined according to the length of its tines. Shorter tines produce higher frequencies, longer tines produce lower frequencies.

These frequency vibrations create audible sound waves, which in turn create a healing effect on the person receiving them. We don’t only hear them with our ears. Every cell of our body receives that frequency and responds to it.

You can easily see resonance in action if you have tuning forks sitting near each other.  When you strike one tuning fork, if you have other tuning forks of the same frequency nearby, they will all start to “sing” in unison.

The same experience happens with crystal singing bowls. Striking one bowl will cause other bowls in the vicinity which have the same frequency to also start to sing.

In life, we are either a transmitter or a receiver.

If we’re a receiver, we are impacted by all those energy signals around us. When someone is having a bad day and is angry or upset around us, as the receiver we are impacted by their negativity and we find our own energy pulled down to match their frequency.

As a transmitter, we have the opposite experience. We are grounded and balanced in our own frequency, emitting a strong signal that draws others to our frequency, and not the other way around. This is how we become the tuning fork.

As I sat on the plane, I allowed myself to sink inwards. I thought of the joy I’ve been experiencing recently, and allowed myself to completely connect with that light and happiness, so that I rested deeply in it.

I had empathy for my friend. I was attentive to her, and her needs in the moment. It was clear she was in angst. However instead of jumping into the angst with her, I remained anchored in my happy place, knowing this was the best way I could support her.

And she did feel me. My joy was indeed a lighthouse for her, that she could feel through her distress. It provided a calm centred energy that she could connect to, a safe haven to counterbalance her pain and distress.

How do we find that anchored place that allows us to be the tuning fork?

I use a special Grounding & Protecting practice each morning, which helps me to maintain that state of calm throughout the day. I learned this process from Russell and Alison Smith, who in turn learned it from Swami Sarasvati.

First, put a glass, ceramic or metal bowl of clean filtered water or spring water in front of you. If you love using essential oils, I particularly like adding 3 drops of Australian Kuranya oil blend into the water. It’s a great blend for helping us unshoulder energetic “baggage”, to bring us into a state of clarity. Here’s the Grounding & Protecting process:

Step 1 (Centred Breathing):
Sit in a quiet place, cross legged or on a chair. With your hands resting on your thighs in chin mudra (index fingers touching thumb), take 3 intentional breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth.

Step 2 (Clearing your Energy Field):
Keeping your left hand on your left thigh in chin mudra, raise your right hand above your head. On your outbreath, slowly bring your right hand down the front of your body (either facing your body or parallel to the ground). Your fingers no longer need to be in chin mudra for your right hand. As you are doing this, imagine that your hand is a magnet, drawing towards itself any energy or darkness you may be carrying that no longer serves you. Once you reach your groin area, brush your right hand off along your right thigh with the intention of releasing this energy back to the earth where it will be transformed.

Repeat this process 3 times, breathing in as your hand returns to its starting point above your crown, and breathing out as you draw your hand down along the front of your body. This step clears your energy field.

Repeat Step 1 (with both hands in chin mudra again).

Step 3: (Grounding your Energy)
Keeping your left hand sitting on your left thigh and with both hands in chin mudra, move your right hand so that your fingertips touch the ground in front of you, then touches your perineum. As you squeeze your perineum, draw your right hand (still in chin mudra) up along the front of your body until you reach your crown, then continue going up above your crown. As you are doing this, imagine you are drawing energy up from the centre of the Earth and into your body.

I like to imagine sand, soil and/or leaf matter being pulled up through my body as I do this, because it gives me the opportunity to connect deeply with the land I am sitting on.

Repeat this process 3 times, breathing in as your hand goes up through your body (with your perineum squeezed), breathing out as you return your hand to its starting position on the ground (with your perineum relaxed). This step grounds your energy into the earth, so you become anchored and solid.

Repeat Step 1 (with both hands in chin mudra again).

Step 4: (Becoming a Sacred Vessel)
Keeping your left hand siting on your left thigh in chin mudra, release your fingers of your right hand and dip them into the water bowl, swirling the water 3 times clockwise.

Then sprinkle the water over your head and face, saying out loud “I am cleansing Mind, Body and Spirit - Om Pavitram Swaha”.

Repeat Step 4 two more times, with the 3 times clockwise swirl in the water, sprinkling the water over yourself, and repeating the mantra each time.

Om Pavitram Swaha is a sanskrit mantra.

  • Om (also spelt AUM) is the primordial sound of creation, calling to us spiritual truth and the energy of the divine (God/Spirit).
  • Pavitram means holy, purified and sanctified.
  • Swaha is an offering to the divine and a surrendering of our egoic identity, instead inviting higher guidance to work through us.

It’s a beautiful mantra that shows our intention to be a clear vessel that Spirit/God may work through, for the good of All.

Repeat Step 1 (with both hands in chin mudra again).

Step 5: (Creating a sphere of Protection)
Rub your palms together vigorously, to create a strong friction and buzz in your palms. Holding your palms about 40cm apart with palms facing each other, feel the ball of energy between them. You may want to move them apart and together a little until you can feel this energy.

If you’re having difficulty feeling this energy, I find that placing a drop of Stress Away oil blend on the palms is very powerful, and amplifies our ability to feel energy.

Once you are feeling this ball of energy between your palms, raise your palms above your head (still keeping them 30 to 40cm apart), and bring that ball down through your body. This just needs to be done once.

This amplifies your Light Body, providing a natural inner protective field.

Step 6: (Optional: White Angelica)
If you love using essential oils, you can finish this process with a drop of White Angelica oil on each shoulder. This oil was created to shield your energy field, protecting you from both psychic attack and the negativity of people around you.
